The Royal Pavilion, Brighton
Photographing the Royal Pavilion in Brighton is a truly unique experience. Few historic buildings in the UK offer such a striking blend of Regency elegance and exotic fantasy, with its onion domes, minarets and richly decorated interiors, it is unlike anything else in the country.
From a photographer’s perspective, the Pavilion was one of the properties high up my list to capture. Externally, the building changes character throughout the day as the sunlight shifts, with dramatic silhouettes and softer, pastel-toned walls. Inside, rooms such as the Banqueting Room and Music Room are a feast of colour, texture and symmetry. I was careful to capture the buildings atmosphere while documenting the interior’s historic fabric. Every surface tells a story, from the hand-painted wallpapers to the elaborate chandeliers and chinoiserie motifs.
What makes the Royal Pavilion especially rewarding is its sense of theatre. Every room showcases George IV’s ambition and taste It was designed to impress, surprise and delight, it remains one of the most visually distinctive heritage buildings in the UK, and a privilege to photograph.
